Delhi gang rape victim dies in Singapore hospital

Delhi gang rape victim dies in Singapore hospital

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - The gang rape victim whose assault in New Delhi triggered nationwide protests died of her injuries on Saturday in a Singapore hospital, potentially threatening fresh protests in India where her case is a rallying point for women's rights.
The 23-year-old medical student, severely beaten, raped and thrown out of a moving bus in New Delhi two weeks ago, had been flown to Singapore in a critical condition by the Indian government on Thursday for specialist treatment.
"We are very sad to report that the patient passed away peacefully at 4:45 a.m. on Dec 29, 2012 (2045 GMT Friday). Her family and officials from the High Commission (embassy) of India were by her side," Mount Elizabeth Hospital Chief Executive Officer Kelvin Loh said in a statement.
Most rapes and other sex crimes in India go unreported and offenders are rarely punished, women's rights activists say. But the brutality of the December 16 assault sparked public outrage and calls for better policing and harsher punishment for rapists.
The case has received blanket coverage on cable television news channels. The woman has not been identified but some Indian media have called her "Amanat", an Urdu word meaning "treasure".
"We are saddened to learn that she has succumbed to her injuries, and would like to extend our deepest condolences to her family during this time of bereavement," Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
Earlier on Friday, the hospital had reported that the woman's condition had taken a turn for the worse. It said that her family had been informed and were by her side.
T.C.A. Raghavan, the Indian High Commissioner to Singapore, said after her death that the family had expressed a desire for her body to be flown back to India. Moments later, the woman's body was loaded into a van and driven away.
Talking to reporters earlier on Saturday, Raghavan declined to comment on reports in India accusing the government of sending her to Singapore to minimise the possible backlash in the event of her death.
Some Indian medical experts had questioned the decision to airlift the woman to Singapore, calling it a risky manoeuvre given the seriousness of her injuries. They had said she was already receiving the best possible care in India.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government has been battling criticism that it was tone-deaf to the outcry and heavy handed in its response to the protests in the Indian capital.
"It is deeply saddening and just beyond words. The police and government definitely have to do something more," said Sharanya Ramachandran, an Indian national working as an engineer in Singapore.
"They should bring in very severe punishment for such cases. They should start recognising that it is a big crime."
"SIGNIFICANT BRAIN INJURY"
The Singapore hospital said earlier that the woman had suffered "significant brain injury" and was surviving against the odds. She had already undergone three abdominal operations before being flown to Singapore.
Protests over the lack of safety for women erupted across India after the attack, culminating last weekend in pitched battles between police and protesters in the heart of New Delhi.
New Delhi has been on edge since the weekend clashes. Hundreds of policemen have been deployed on the streets of the capital and streets leading to the main protest site, the India Gate war memorial, have been shut for long periods, severely disrupting traffic in the city of 16 million.
Commentators and sociologists say the rape has tapped into a deep well of frustration that many Indians feel over what they see as weak governance and poor leadership on social and economic issues.
Many protesters have complained that Singh's government has done little to curb the abuse of women in the country of 1.2 billion. A global poll by the Thomson Reuters Foundation in June found that India was the worst place to be a woman because of high rates of infanticide, child marriage and slavery.
New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures. Government data show the number of reported rape cases in the country rose by nearly 17 percent between 2007 and 2011.

Delhi gangrape: Police returns with 'vital' information on absconding accused Thakur

The Delhi police team, that came here in search of Akshay Thakur, an accused in Delhi gangrape case, returned on Thursday with "vital" information on the fugitive. Aurangabad acting superintendent of police Pranav Kumar said the Delhi police team rigorously questioned the father and brother of the accused, who hails from Lahankarma village of the district and is about 125 km from Patna, before returning to the national capital.
The SP said that though the accused could not be caught, the police team has collected 'vital' information which will help catch him soon. The accused's father Saryu Singh and younger brother Abhay Singh were detained by the police and rigorously questioned at Tandwa police station Wednesday evening. They were later released, the SP said.
Meanwhile, residents of the village expressed deep anguish over what they felt was maligning of the name of the village by Thakur, the fifth accused in the gangrape of the girl in the national capital in a moving bus on Sunday. Many of them even sought death sentence for Thakur for the barbaric act.

A stoic silence prevailed in Thakur's home which was broken time to time by cries of women of the family. Thakur, son of a marginal farmer, studied in government school at Tandwa till matriculation before leaving for Chhattisgarh to work in some brew factory. He had landed in Delhi a year ago, the locals said.
Lallan Ram, JD(U) MLA of Kutumba in the district, said the incident was extremely condemnable and has soiled the name of Aurangabad. Rajendra Chaudhary, the head of Ramnagar panchayat under which Lahankarma village falls, said Akshay Thakur had put a blot on the name of the village and demanded stringent punishment to him for being involved in the heinous crime.
Sarpanch Arvind Paswan too expressed grief over the involvement of a resident of the village in the gang rape. Safalta Singh of neighbouring Dhami village demanded that Thakur along with other accused in the gangrape be hanged without any loss of time.

Delhi gangrape: Sheila Dikshit offers international treatment for 23-year-old victim

New Delhi: The 23-year-old gang-rape victim may be taken abroad for medical treatment if needed, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said on Thursday. "Her condition is very critical, she has a lot of injuries but if there is a need to take her abroad to treat her and save her life, we will not hesitate," Dikshit said.
The woman, gang-raped and savaged four days ago, was conscious and in stable condition but there was danger of infection setting in, said doctors treating her at Safdarjung Hospital. The victim, who was interning as a physiotherapist at a hospital in Delhi, had her gangrenous intestines removed in a two-hour surgery Wednesday.
Dikshit government has come under attack after the incident with students, activists and citizens alike protesting against flimsy security facilities provided to women in the national capital.

Delhi gang-rape: Victim's friend identifies one of the accused

New DelhiThe male friend of the victim in the Delhi gang-rape case has identified one of the accused in an identification parade today. He took a minute to identify one of the accused out of 11 men who were brought in front of him, say police sources.

The friend of the medical student has been helping the police in its investigation. The young man was attacked by a group of drunk and leering men, who then raped his friend in a bus in Delhi on Sunday night. He shared his version of what happened in a Delhi court yesterday.

Four men, including the driver of the chartered bus, have been arrested in the case while two are on the run.

The 23-year-old victim, meanwhile, is on a ventilator at a Delhi hospital. The young woman who was gang-raped and attacked with an iron rod on a bus in Delhi is "stable, conscious and alert" this morning after a major surgery yesterday, her doctors said. Large infected parts of her intestines were removed in a two-hour operation yesterday, the latest in a series of complicated procedures she has gone through since her attack on Sunday night.

On Sunday night, the girl and her male friend, both from Uttar Pradesh, boarded a bus after watching a movie. The six men, who were already on board, began harassing the girl. He tried to stop them. They turned on him with an iron rod, striking his head over and over. She then tried to rescue him. Furious, the six men began hitting her. Then they took turns raping her while one of them kept the bus circling on South Delhi's roads.

The tinted windows of the privately-owned bus concealed the horror unfolding within.

Delhi gangrape victim very critical, placed on ventilator

Delhi gangrape victim very critical, placed on ventilator

The 23-year-old Delhi girl who was gangraped and thrown off a bus is in a "very critical condition", authorities at the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi said.

"The patient is very critical," SN Makwana, press information officer at the Safdarjung Hospital, said.

The boy was taken Safdarjung but discharged.

The condition of the girl had deteriorated and she was placed on ventilator with grave injuries in the stomach and intestines, the official said. She bore signs of having been beaten with a blunt object, he added.

The incident took place late last night when the girl along with her male friend, who is an engineer and currently working in a firm, took a White Line bus from Munirka in south Delhi to Dwarka at around 10.00 pm.

During the journey, the girl was allegedly gandraped by a group of five to six men and even assaulted her when she resisted their attempt. The victim's friend was also beaten up and both were thrown off the bus near Mahipalpur flyover an hour later.

Passers-by had informed the police who came to the spot and rushed the duo to AIIMS from where the girl was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital.

Doctors at the hospital said the victim was in a "critical condition" and that she is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

A case has been registered at the Vasant Vihar Police Station, but no arrests have been made so far.

The girl, who studies in a college in Dehra Dun, is in the capital for her internship.

The incident evoked sharp reactions from women organisations as well as political parties with NCW chairperson Mamata Sharma leading the campaign.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the permit of the bus has been cancelled by the Transport Department and necessary action would be taken to ensure such incidents don't happen in the future.

"I have been told by transport department that their licence has been cancelled. We will take all the necessary measures to ensure that such incidents don't happen," she said.

Describing the incident as 'shocking', Delhi Women and Child Development Minister Kiran Walia said that government would seriously work on installing CCTV cameras inside buses.

"This is shocking incident. I hope that the guilty are punished for the heinous crime," she said.

Accusing the Delhi government of handling the law and order matter "carelessly", BJP spokesperson Muqhtar Abbas Naqvi said such incidents take place regularly but they are neither taken seriously by the Home Ministry nor by the police.

"This incident will be replaced with another incident after few days. I believe that Delhi's law and order and security issues are handled carelessly by the government," Naqvi said.
